We all have an opinion on nutrition, because we all eat and we all have a relationship with food.

With that comes the wealth of information on the internet, in magazines and in the general media. Some of the information is from well credentialled health practitioners, some from well-meaning community members but some, unfortunately, is from those wishing to sell the latest and greatest fad. Times are tricky and it's hard to know what is fact or fiction.

That's where a dietitian comes in.

what is a dietitian?

Dietitians are university trained health professionals who help individual people, groups and communities improve their health by applying the science of human nutrition.

Traditionally, Dietitians were well known for assisting people to lose weight, perform better as an athlete or just helping people to eat that "little bit healthier".

Times have changed and nowadays, Dietitians do more than DIETS. In fact a great Dietitian,  will have the clinical training and counselling skills to help people to change their nutritional intake to manage a multitude of physical and mental health conditions.  

There are two new exciting approaches, many Dietitians are now using. These are called, The "Non-Diet Approach and Health At Every Size ®. Although they are technically different things (the non-diet approach is a way to apply the principles of HAES ®), both help people to make dietary changes without food restriction and without a focus on body weight. I know. About time hey?

how can a dietitian help you with your health?

There are many, many scientific studies that suggest a change in nutrition improved or even prevented certain health conditions. It's important to note though, nutrition is not the "be-all" of health.

For instance a diet high in fruit and vegetables has been shown to reduce our risk of developing heart disease, getting a stroke, developing constipation and even some cancers! It's also been shown to help reduce blood pressure, cholesterol levels and control Diabetes. *

We also know so many other things in our lives contribute to our health and a good Dietitian will be asking you about your whole life (not just food).

Oh - And times are changing. Dietitians offer more than just face-to-face clinic appointments these days. They also offer telephone, skype/online, walking appointments along with group programs and workshops. They work in hospitals, research, charities, consult to the media, sporting teams, workplace wellness programs and more!
